Did you know that you should continue to keep with your lawn maintenance throughout the cold and winter months? Despite the crisp leaves and snow covering your grass for the next 5 months, your grass underneath it all needs a little feeding occasionally to keep it healthy and looking good when everything melts again.
If you are a new homeowner with freshly laid grass in your front and backyard, get going on these quick and inexpensive maintenance tips for your lawn.
-
Feed Your Lawn
Roughly six weeks before an expected frost, feed your lawn with cool season fertilizer. Scotts® Turf Builder sells a seasonal fertilizer that provides nutrients to help it survive the winter. This phosphate-free lawn food is great because you can walk on it right after its applied.
-
Keep Watering
This only applies up until there is snow on the ground, but you should make an active effort to water your lawn once a week, every other week depending on the amount of rainfall. While you are feeding your lawn, it is going to need water to help it grow strong and healthy to survive the winter.
To avoid standing outside in the cold for 10mins, purchase an affordable sprinkler from your local store that you can attach to your hose. The Home Depot sells smaller attachments from $30 - $50.

Continuously Clear Off Leaves
Raking your leaves is a tedious but important home maintenance task that is highly recommended when maintaining lawn care. The weight from the leaves blocks your grass from absorbing water and sunlight to help it grow. The remnants from the leaves also put the lawn at risk from obtaining any disease or bacteria that can kill its roots.
Mowing the lawn helps protect the grass roots. In late fall, the grass should be cut at lease 1-2 inches shorter than usual, so it does not get too long and die.
Everybody’s home is different and requires its own unique care but if want a bright and shining lawn for when spring blooms next year, try and keep up with the above maintenance tasks.
